There are quite a few similarities between management skills and leadership skills as both of them involve planning, problem-solving, time-management, communication, and delegation. All good managers tend to be good leaders. But still, the two roles are different from one another.
In having necessary management skills, managers are able to ensure all the moving parts of the company or organization are able to work with one another in synchronization and effectively. If this synchronization is not there, then chances are that problems can arise and they may fall apart through the cracks.

In order to become a successful manager, there are three management skills types that are a must have.
- Interpersonal or human management skills
In having conceptual skills, a manager is able to think in an abstract way. What this skill does is help analyze and diagnose different states and thereby facilitating the prediction of the future of department or the business as a whole.
Technical skills give managers ability and knowledge to employ different techniques to achieve what they have set out to achieve. However, technical skills are not just limited to any equipment, production tools, or machines, but they also involve skills required for increasing types of products, marketing the products, increasing sales, and so on.
Interpersonal or human management skills are important for managers as it presents them with the ability and knowledge to work with all kinds of people. Some Effective Management Skills Examples
- Planning – Managers many not be involved in planning and creating company’s policies and strategies, but they need to be able to plan, if required. As a manager, you need to be able to plan according to resources available to you.
- Organizing – would require managers to create structures that would help accomplish or support a plan. As a part of organizing procedure, managers may often be required to create a new layout for the office, a new system of who reports to whom, how to measure milestones, how to progress toward milestones, etc.
- Coordinating – A manager also needs to coordinate well if the desired results are to be achieved. In fact, the manager has to have an idea of what is happening and what needs to happen if the goals have to be met. The manager needs to decipher if someone is miscommunicating or if any resource is being underutilized, and so on.
- Directing – also known as delegating, is where the manager will take stock of the situation in hand and tell people what exactly they need to do.
- Overseeing – Keeping a track of what is going around and setting all things right if they aren’t already is what overseeing is all about.
