Should managers take responsibility of their team’s development needs?
How will a manager train his employees unless he himself is well equipped with the nuances of the art of training, what is the point of concern, what training and what training outcomes should be?
All these questions are addressed when managers engaged in training employees; go through a training program.
Some of the important training’s managers need to undergo are as follows-
- Business Knowledge
Training managers for any A to Z Company, requires a thorough knowledge of a company and needs to answer a few questions-
- How your product is bought, sold, and delivered to customers.
- Why your product exists, and what problem it solves.
- How your broader industry operates, the pressures it has, and how it makes money.
- An awareness of the competition and new trends in your line of business
A training manager needs to be well oriented about his company and has to be trained about all the aspects of the firm.
- Strong Communication and Interpersonal training
Perfect trainers require a command on speaking skills. Understanding problems, conveying ideas, conducting training – all of this is carried through words. If you have trouble communicating, it’s unlikely you’ll be able to get your staff properly motivated, or effectively describe the reasons behind the need for the training you’re recommending to your employees.
So in order to justify the reasons for recommending training to employees, managers first need to be convinced of the outcomes, only then can they deliver the same to the trainees.
Moreover, managers need to interact with employees coming from all walks of life; therefore, having command over interpersonal skills is another important aspect. Not all employees have the same temperament; managers need to deal with all sorts of people having different perspectives, not matching their mental level yet they need to act calmly so as to avoid any hassles.
Only when managers present themselves as patient, cool headed can they reflect the same in the training. Employees will grasp what they observe in the manager, therefore, it’s the manager’s responsibility to set a good example that employees can look up to.
- Soft skills training
Apart from having technical skills, what takes a person ahead in life is the presence of right soft skills. Soft skills include training in-
- Behavioral skills as in how to behave in a professional setting
- Handling conflicting situations rationally
- Working in teams
- Leadership skills
All these are the underlying skills that ensure how far you progress in your career because your technical skills can get you your first job but what takes you to the fore are these soft skills. Hence, managers need to be trained well in these skills.
- Time management
Managers need to master the art of time management be it any level managers. They need to organize work and delegate responsibilities as per their skills.
Managers have to further realize the concept of job fit, they are responsible for training employees, and therefore, they need to be trained in understanding the nuances of different aspects of job. Accordingly they’ll train employees as per the requirements of a job
Managers need to realize the significance of utilizing time in the most appropriate manner wherein they need to understand that being particular about achieving targets is the key to managing time. Only when they understand the significance of managing time can they convey the same to the people they train.
