There are various steps and examples in crisis management one can consider when an organization has to go through a phase called ‘CRISIS’. It is important that managers and the organization as a whole need to go through these steps and examples if they were to be prepared for an event of an emergency.
Steps in Crisis Management and Examples
- Threat analysis:
Before anything else, you need to be able to decipher possible disaster or emergency situation that your organization could face in future. The emergency situation can either be natural like an earthquake or those resulting from situations like loss of data, cyber intrusion, etc. In extreme cases, it could also be due to threats coming from your competitors, unwanted publicity arising out if misconduct of a key employee or loss of important accounts.
- Review contingencies:
Once all crisis or threat situations have been identified, the next logical step would be to identify the most dangerous of them all that could hit your company hard. So as a manager or an important person of the company, you need to select the key contingencies and prepare a blueprint of the scenario that your company might have to deal with in future. When you define a scenario it becomes easier to chart out recovery plans for the same.
- Identify preparations:
Once the possible scenarios are studied and planning is done, you may need to put in some critical preparation. As a part of crisis management plan, these could include prepositional supplies like backup electrical generators, emergency kits, or backup data centers to take over the primary data centers just in case there is a danger of losing data or vital information. As a part of preparation, you may also wish to include cell phone numbers and home addresses of critical personnel or create a specialized team to handle a PR crisis.
4.Selection and appointment of a crisis management team:
Once all the scenarios are planned and necessary preparations for the same are charted out, the next step would be to appoint a crisis management team that can take charge of a situation arising out of a crisis. If you foresee multiple scenarios, then you may need to designate different people taking stalk of different scenarios. Here, it is not just important to assign the responsibility to the team members, but they need to be given authority to make decisions and act on them.
5. Educate everyone:
It is not just the crisis management team members; even others need to be educated about possible crisis scenarios. You may need to explain important procedures like emergency exits, evacuation drills, etc and even give them basic training if required.
Types of Crisis
There are different types of crisis management techniques depending on the crisis type you are dealing with.
Some of the crisis types include:
- Natural crisis:
Crisis arising due to a natural phenomenon or environmental disturbances that are beyond human control like earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, etc.
- Technological crisis:
Crisis arising out of malfunctioning or failure of technology or physical breakdown of hardware components can be referred to as a technological crisis.
- Rumor crisis:
Crisis arising out of rumors pertaining to a brand or organization, in general, may take a lot of time to resolve.
